The physician's letter, which I have kept though I ought perhaps to have burned it along with the rest of that correspondence, was explicit on the matter of orientation - the room must face the morning sun, and face it fully, for the heliotherapeutic virtue of early light was held by the better sanatoriums of the day to work upon the nervous system in a manner no lamp or stove could counterfeit. I am told, though I cannot vouch for the source, that certain older households once oriented their good rooms by the same reasoning for reasons rather less medical.
