The threshold between the sunroom and the rest of the house was, at Dr. Ashworth's specific instruction, to remain always open during the day, that the "wholesome air" of the room might circulate freely through the household rather than being kept, as he put it, "hoarded." I mention only in passing that thresholds of this kind have carried a rather older significance in the folk practice of more than one culture I encountered on my travels, though I doubt the good doctor intended any such resonance when he wrote his instruction.
