Dr. Ashworth was insistent that I sit in this light for no less than forty minutes each morning, a prescription he termed, without apparent irony, "actinic exposure" — the belief being current in respectable medical circles that certain invisible rays of the morning sun acted directly upon the blood and the nerves, restoring what the expedition had, in his words, "borrowed and not returned." I confess I found myself, in the early weeks, watching the angle of that light with an attention closer to superstition than to science, as though its arrival were a thing that might, on some morning, fail to come.
