The fern was recommended less for beauty than for function - contemporary opinion held that green growing things drew off the "vitiated air" of a sickroom and returned something purer in its place, a belief with just enough truth in it — plants do, after all, exchange gases — to have survived the era's more fanciful theories intact. I will note, though the good doctor did not, that ferns have for a very long while been planted at thresholds and boundaries in older folk practice, ostensibly to discourage what does not wish to be seen crossing them.
