The prescribed cure required a view of growing, living things — the theory holding that the eye's contact with green and flowering nature exerted a measurable calming effect upon an overtaxed nervous constitution, a notion the medical journals of the day took entirely seriously under the heading of "restorative outlook." That glass itself has, in certain older traditions, been credited with a similar power to admit sight while denying passage to less welcome things, I set down here without further comment, save that I have found myself glad of the pane between the garden and my chair more often than seems entirely rational.
