The tile was chosen, practically, for its coolness in summer and its ease of cleaning — but I have also seen, in an old surveyor's notebook loaned to me by a colleague in Anthropology, a diagram of a threshold laid in a not dissimilar pattern, described there as a boundary "neither wholly within nor without," which I mention only because Professor Verrico, upon seeing a photograph of this very floor, asked a great many questions I did not care to answer at length.
