Rest, in the treatment of nervous exhaustion, was prescribed almost as a medicine in its own right — the "rest cure" fashionable among physicians of nerves calling for long, unbroken hours of quiet occupation, reading foremost among the permitted activities, so long as the material was calming and the posture reclined. I was given a list of approved authors and, separately, a list of subjects I was asked not to read on, the latter list rather longer and more specific than I had expected from a physician of the body.
